Specialists in complex infrastructure

BakerHicks is a design, engineering and project delivery company, specialising in complex infrastructure, process and built environments across the full project life cycle. Our disciplines range from initial architecture to civil and structural, building services, specialist high voltage and process engineering services, project management and CDM consultancy, using the latest innovations in Building Information Modelling (BIM) for the most efficient and cost-effective design.

The company name comes from two pioneers of the founding business: Professor Sir John Baker (later Lord Baker), Research and Development Director and previously Head of Cambridge University’s Engineering Department; and Howard Hicks, the Group Chairman and Chief Executive. The name BakerHicks better reflects our established reputation as an independent consultancy, delivering award-winning design and engineering services across the UK since 1957.

BakerHicks is part of Morgan Sindall Group plc, a leading UK construction and regeneration group with a revenue of c £3 billion and which operates through five divisions of Construction & Infrastructure, Fit Out, Property Services, Partnership Housing and Urban Regeneration.

The BakerHicks Story

The BakerHicks story began over 60 years ago in Stratford-upon-Avon with the establishment of the IDC Group in 1957. Over the next 60 years while there were changes of ownership and name, there has also been a strong continuity of service offering.

1957 - 1987
The IDC Group and Howard Hicks era

The IDC Group was established with the aim of providing a fully integrated design and construction service for industry and commerce in the UK.

Over the 30 years the business operated as IDC it grew to encompass 18 principal subsidiary companies, operating in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America. The Group’s client list was an impressive collection of blue-chip companies at the time, including household names such as Kelloggs, L’Oreal, Ford, Coca-Cola and Sony, and companies such as Smith Kline and French, who are still BakerHicks clients in the guise of Glaxo Smith Kline.

The Group’s Chairman, Chief Executive and majority shareholder was Howard Hicks. The business also had a research and development director, Professor Sir John F Baker (later Lord Baker) who was previously Head of Cambridge University’s Engineering Department.

1987 - 1988
The Matthew Hall Group acquires IDC Group

In 1987 it was acquired by the Matthew Hall Group, a chemical and industrial engineering company with a heritage dating back to 1848 when its founder, Matthew Hall, opened a lead working business in Lambeth.

The IDC Group merged into the Engineering branch of the Matthew Hall Group. By 1988 the Matthew Hall Group, including IDC, comprised of over 40 companies and operated in the UK, Australia, Europe and North America.

1988 - 2007
Amec plc acquires Matthew Hall Group

One year later, in 1988, the international consultancy, engineering and project management company, Amec plc, bought the Matthew Hall Group.

Amec plc was established, and listed on the London Stock Exchange, in 1982, from a merger between the William Press Group (founded 1913) and Leonard Fairclough & Sons (founded 1883). Leonard Fairclough & Sons’ brought a long history of expertise to Amec; in 1923 they built one of the first UK bypass roads at Purfleet and in 1961 built the Thelwall viaduct as well as being owners of the largest road mobile crane in the UK.

In 2006 Amec formed a Design and Project Services Limited (DPS) as its construction and civil engineering arm, including design and civil engineering activities. DPS operated in the UK’s health, defence, industrial, utilities and transport sectors, employing approximately 2,800 people.

Morgan Sindall acquire Amec and form Morgan Professional Services

In 2007 the Morgan Sindall Group bought Amec DPS, along with Amec’s large-scale, mixed-use urban regeneration business, Amec Developments (ADL).

The Morgan Sindall Group was formed in 1994 when Morgan Lovell (founded by John Morgan and Jack Lovell in 1977) took over the hugely respected construction company, William Sindall plc (founded in 1860s). The Group was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1994 as a result of this takeover.

Following the acquisition of Amec DPS in 2007, the Group established Morgan Professional Services as a separate registered business from the design capabilities of DPS. From this point onwards we as a business have been the design and engineering arm of the Group.

Morgan Sindall Professional Services established

In 2010 Morgan Professional Services was renamed, becoming Morgan Sindall Professional Services (MSPS). MSPS continued to operate under the umbrella of Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure for a further five years, until in 2015 when we became a separate entity.

MSPS offered design, engineering and project management services in the life sciences and manufacturing, nuclear, defence and government, power, public and transport sectors out of the very same offices the IDC Group was first formed in.

Morgan Sindall Professional Services becomes BakerHicks.
