BakerHicks’ Scottish office has raised £500 over the first six months of 2019 in support of Hub South East Scotland’s nominated local charity, the Grassmarket Community Project (GCP). Mari McGahey from BakerHicks and Joanne MacDougall from Hub South East visited the charity at the end of June to present them with the cheque.

The funds were raised through the BakerHicks office’s tuck shop, which offers a selection of snacks and drinks, and will go towards helping the GCP provide a variety of services to some of Edinburgh's most vulnerable citizens.

One of the key drivers of the Hub programme is the delivery of real community benefits, so we’re proud to have a supply chain that supports this ethos and is keen to give something back. We’d like to thank BakerHicks for choosing to donate to the GCP. Having partnered with this amazing charity for the last four years, we’re obviously familiar with the great work it does, so it was a pleasure to share this. We introduced Mari to Jonny Kinross, the GCP Chief Executive, and she was able to tour the Project and hear first-hand how gifts like this really do make such a difference.

A not-for-profit organisation, the Project aims to create community and provide sanctuary and support to those it helps. Through mentoring, social enterprise, training and education it enables its members to develop to their full potential and escape from cycles of failure. As well as operating a community café and woodwork and tartan enterprises, the Project also offers a range of activities aimed at enhancing life skills and developing confidence. These include cookery and baking classes, art, drama, IT, reading and writing, sewing, and photography.

Hub South East, whose Professional Services Framework BakerHicks are on, has been supporting the GCP since 2015. During this time it has organised two charity days, raising over £40,000 which has been reinvested into six of the Project’s social enterprises, as well as funding the development of a counselling room and service for its members.

It was fantastic to get the opportunity to visit the Grassmarket Community Project to present them with the cheque. We were given a tour of the woodwork shop and saw some of the beautiful furniture produced from wood donated by local churches that will go to newly developed nurseries. It was so interesting to get a flavour of the work this worthwhile cause does for the local community. I’m very proud that we were able to help support them. I also couldn’t help but buy some of their beautiful products from the tartan enterprise!
