Virtual site experience .

News 19 Feb 2019

BakerHicks’ Building Information Management (BIM) team recently worked with sister companies, Morgan Sindall Construction & Morgan Sindall Infrastructure to create a Virtual Reality site experience for third year civil engineering students at Strathclyde University.

Highlights .

  • Working with civil engineering students at Strathclyde University
  • Industry insights post-graduation
  • BIM team created virtual reality project views

The team at Morgan Sindall run a mentoring programme at the University, holding a series of workshops that help give the students a better understanding and some experience of the work they could be involved with once they graduate. For the second workshop they created exercises focusing on the recently completed sewer works and pipe jacking on their Sighthill TRA Contract 2 site.

BakerHicks’ BIM team created Virtual Reality (VR) views of the shaft, compound and pit bottom for the team. The VR experience gave the students an appreciation of the scale of the works as well as the hazards associated with pipe jacking. As part of the exercise the students used the VR videos to identify hazards and think how they could be mitigated on site. This gave them a chance to be exposed to a high risk environment without needing to set foot on site.

To experience the site tour see below or follow this link. To get the full experience when using the link, you can use a smartphone with a basic VR headset to see the viewer in VR mode.
