Five minutes on… systems architecture with Franck Kaehlin, Technology Manager .

News 11 Nov 2024

Continuing our interview series, we spoke to Technology Manager, Franck Kaehlin, to learn more about the impact that systems and technology can have on the delivery of a project.

Highlights .

  • Technology solutions that save time, reduce costs and support the transition from completion to operations
  • Managing the complexities of design, documentation and asset management
  • Supporting systems rollout and beyond

First, can you expand on what a Technology Manager in a design, engineering and project delivery company does?

There’s a lot of tech, programmes and platforms that can all help a client to design and deliver their projects. It’s my job to understand the requirements of the client and project, as well as any mid-long-term strategy so we can ensure that the design information is processed in the right way at the right time, so it’s the best fit for now but also in the future.

This means we have to fully understand the user requirements to create a suitable system architecture that fits. From computer aided design/engineering systems to electronic document management (eDMS) systems and software that supports the management of engineering, assets and maintenance, this holistic way of thinking can add significant benefits beyond the project life cycle and into operations.

What benefits does it offer?

In today's fast-paced digital world, selecting the right design, engineering, eDMS or CMMS system can make or break a project. Across the sectors, it’s more important than ever that design teams hit the ground running so with technology management at the heart of a project’s delivery, solutions that save time, assure quality of data, reduce costs, and seamlessly transition from completion to operations are essential.

What type of project do you typically work on?

Currently, I'm mainly supporting clients in the Life Sciences sector, but this approach to delivery is industry wide. I recently worked with a global biopharmaceutical company specialising in plasma-derived and cell therapies for rare diseases. The client was planning a new multi-line production facility and needed a streamlined approach to manage the complexity of the design and its development.

By implementing an advanced engineering system, we delivered a cohesive collaboration platform for the client. This included advice on the engineering database, setting the direction for process and document management through to supporting with the system rollout and beyond.
